Wangari Maathai - Tree Woman
I like to write about a woman who really inspired me a lot. About her, she won Nobel Prize for peace in 2004 and she was the first African woman to receive that award. She was choosen as the World’s Best Citizenship award for the current year. Even last month she received Indira Gandhi Peace award in India.
She is none other than Dr. Wangari Maathai, an environmentist and politician from Ghana. In 1977, She founded Green Belt Movement, a non-organization movement. Since then the Green Belt movement planted more than 3 crore trees across Kenya. That’s why she is affectionately called “Tree Mother of Africa” and also “Tree Woman”. Still she is continuing her contribution to the society. It’s a tremendous achievement by the 67-year old Kenyan woman. Especially, we are living in the Globalization World. Each and everyday we are destroying forests, farmlands, trees for various reasons. Due to that we are facing dramatic climate change across the world, soil erosion, etc. so, it’s very much important to us to appreciate her contribution, dedication to the society. She really deserved to won many more awards. Really it’s my pleasure to write about her.
